PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) TREATMENT

Dr Ali provides innovative Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection Therapy at St Kilda Road Medical Centre. This supports his special interest in musculoskeletal and sport medicine by offering an innovative and effective treatment for soft tissue injuries including tendon, muscle and ligaments, as well as mild to moderate osteoarthritis, and other injuries and joint pain.

What is PRP?

The Platelet Rich Plasma treatment uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specific area. Platelet Rich Plasma consists of two elements: plasma (the liquid portion of blood) and platelets (a type of blood cell) that plays an important role in healing throughout the body. Platelets contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the area being treated. Platelet Rich Plasma is simply blood that contains more platelets than normal.

What is PRP?

To create platelet-rich plasma, a blood sample is taken and placed it into a device that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma. After creating platelet-rich plasma from a patient’s blood sample, that solution is injected under ultrasound guidance into the affected area.

The treatment increases the concentration of Platelet Rich Plasma in a specific area to accelerate the healing process.

Platelet-rich plasma is a therapeutic option to treat many medical conditions.

What are the indications of PRP?

  • Tendinopathies: PRP is commonly used in the treatment of tendon injuries and chronic tendinopathies, such as:
    • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
    • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
    • Achilles tendinopathy
    • Patellar Tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
    • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Osteoarthritis: PRP has been investigated as a potential treatment for osteoarthritis, primarily in joints such as the knee, hip, and shoulder. It aims to reduce pain and improve joint function.
  • Muscle Injuries: PRP may be used in the treatment of muscle strains and tears, particularly in elite athletes or cases where accelerated healing is desired.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: PRP injections have been explored as a treatment option for plantar fasciitis, a condition characterized by heel pain.
